Alan Demby, South African Gold Coin Exchange.

Alan Demby is an entrepreneur, international coin dealer, world-renowned bullion expert and executive chairman of The South African Gold Coin Exchange (SAGCE) and its retail division, The Scoin Shop. Born in Manchester, United Kingdom, Demby has been at the forefront of the international coin industry since 1977.

 

He has a B Com degree from the University of the Witwatersrand (1976) and a B Com (Honours) degree from UNISA (1981). Demby has worked tirelessly to ensure that the SAGCE has become a household name in the South African coin industry. It is now the largest distributor of gold bullion and collectable coins and medallions in South Africa and is committed to building long term relationships with both collectors and customers. In 1999 The Scoin Shop, The SAGCE’s retail division, opened its doors for the first time in Sandton City, Johannesburg.

 

His pioneering approach to the retail outlets has ensured that between 30% - 40% of SAGCE’s turnover comes from the shops. Today, there are over 25 Scoin Shops in South Africa and Namibia. Demby’s success in the business has not gone unnoticed. In 2010 he was a finalist in the prestigious Mapic International business awards for International Retailer of the year.

 

Demby was also a finalist in the Jewish Businessman of the year, twice. In November 2012, SAGCE bought Stephan Weltz & Co famed auction house and the market leaders in art, allowing Demby to trade in stamps, coins, collectors’ pieces as well as fine art.
