JULY 18 is Nelson Mandela International Day | What are you planning to do?

In 2009 the United Nations recognized July 18, Nelson Mandela’s birthday, as a special day – asking everyone in the world to give time to public service - to take 67 minutes of the day to make a difference in another's life.

What did you do on Mandela Day? Please let us know and the first five people in the U.S.A. to respond will receive a free Mandela token medallion, depicting "Long walk to Freedom". (See details below.)

It has been 18 months since the death of Mandela and it is with his formidable legacy in mind that the South African Gold Coin Exchange continues to honor the former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate with special exuberance and good deeds on this International Nelson Mandela Day.

Last year, Alan Demby, Chairman of the South African Gold Coin Exchange, dressed down from his usual formal business attire, wearing a Mandela day T Shirt, stood outside the United Nations to remind New Yorkers and tourists about the significance of the day, chatting with passersby and handing out free “We Love Mandela” buttons and South African Gold Coin Exchange Mandela “Long Walk to Freedom” medallions.

Demby spoke to people about the importance of Nelson Mandela International day with this message: “For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa. Now we are giving you our gift to remember him. We hope you keep it as a reminder that 'ordinary people can do extraordinary things' - that you too can make a difference in the lives of others.”

The South African Gold Coin Exchange has the worldwide rights to distribute Nobel Peace Prize Laureates on coins and medallions. Royalties from sales comprise a significant portion of funding to the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

The South African Gold Coin Exchange, launched a special medallion to commemorate this special day - The Mandela Day Gold Medallion, which immortalizes the essence of what Mandela stood for:
